What is Laser Therapy?
Laser”—an acronym for “light amplification of stimulated emission of radiation”
Laser therapy is an ideal modality to help decrease inflammation and pain in our pets. Low level light lasers use photobiomodulation which is a term to describe the photochemical effects in cells. Light emitted from the laser is absorbed by the mitochondria in the cells which is the powerhouse of the cell. The mitochondria produce ATP(energy) which powers the functions of the cells. The cells are stimulated to repair, promote growth, and proliferate. They are essentially activated to help heal themselves. In addition, the light also helps remove nitric oxide from inside the cell which has hampered ATP production. After removal from the cell, the nitric oxide causes vasodilation, which is widening of the vessels and encourages healthy blood flow to the affected site.
